SlowMoneyFarm - down to earth investing, growing

Angel Investing

Fancy it isn't. But sound it is. Quality livestock means production of quality meats. Gardens grown to your tastes mean farmers market fresh in abundance, whatever is grown in your garden plot is yours. This might mean a short crop of carrots and a bumper crop of tomatoes - or the other way around! Starting seeds, tilling and other projects must be done early. In order to have a full crop in 2012 this means putting together a complete amount to purchase the land, buildings, fences and livestock needed in the amounts needed.

We don't aim to produce 3000 hogs per year or 10,000 chickens. While this is needed for the volume of people who buy at the grocery store our focus is much smaller. The home freezer and freezers for up to a dozen folks who entrust us to grow food for them. We're looking for people who care about what they eat and how it was produced. We're looking to provide a living where there are few jobs and, although still not a get rich in 10 years project it means providing for just a few people to do what we know best - farming.

In addition it slows rising food costs. There is little secret that costs have gone up. Steaks and roasts are $10-20 or more - for a per pound grown-for-you cost that even with cut/wrap to your specifications is less than half of that! Perhaps whole holiday hams are too much - consider half hams of heritage pork. Fresh country eggs and heritage turkey for Thanksgiving. The latter in some areas last year was seen as high as $250 per bird. We aren't on "a race to the bottom." We don't look to produce hundreds of thousands of anything per year. Instead we're thinking smaller, with quality.

Gardens are laid out according to the customer's tastes. Someone eating vegetarian meals will naturally probably want a larger garden spot than someone getting a mix of meats and produce. We can do this! We will fence the garden area to keep any accidental animal escapes out of the garden, and can use that fence as well for vines. If you are interested in vegetarian, vegan or all meat options those can be accommodated. You don't HAVE to include everything. Setting out a plan up front lets you know the options to choose from and allows us to plant for it. This is a very cost effective way to add fresh vegetables, herbs, flowers (edible or decorative!), eggs, meats and other products as you wish, tailored to your tastes. This is possible to do because our farm is covered, our market secure as we know our supporters are waiting for the food. It allows us to grow for a small number of people, who have the option of renewing after the first amount is paid back.

We'll have a brochure as well as the website at SlowMoneyFarm.com available also.

What is available and in place for starters is a solid herd of Giant Chinchilla rabbits, considered endangered by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. We already have the equipment to care for them, but are at an expansion point! We already have started a small poultry flock. Experience with a variety of livestock has been gained over 40 years in all aspects of the animals tended. We already have the basics and the beginning, including a growing market for rabbit meat. We already have contacts in key cities interested in meats.

As mentioned rare breeds will be a focus. These may include Tamworth and Hereford hogs, North country Cheviot and Tunis sheep and Galloway and milking (dual purpose) Devon cattle. Some cattle may be crossed with the Belgian Blue, allowing for larger steaks and cuts from the same time growing due to naturally heavy muscled characteristics. It also includes time spent tending gardens and other projects that are often unseen. We have ready to order rare, heritage breeds of chicken, turkey, ducks and geese.

The food supply can be a mystery to many who are removed from the farm. We know farming. we have the ability to grow heritage, home raised small farm produce and meats. Nuts and berries will also be planted, although these typically take a few years to begin bearing. We seek to provide food choices in an active, hands on way. For those who can afford to exercise additional choices we provide it, and are continually looking to the future.

Slow money makes a difference. We use slow money investments with slow food to create good food at reasonable prices, custom grown for the customer.

There is much misinformation about our food supply. We seek to correct that, hands on, with step by step education as well as doing the work growing food. It's as down to earth as we can be. We hope you'll join in the vision.
